Incotho is made from the papery root of Boophone. It is used by diviners as a mirror to help see in the spirit, hence the name isipili. The root is used to prepare intelezi, to chase away demons. The powder can also be mixed with umlomo’mnandi powder to concoct a mixture to help make your speech more compelling.

The leaves of the plant are arranged like the pages of a book, hence the name incwadi.
