In 1868, Carl Maunch (a German explorer and geographer of Africa) uncovered some of the ancient gold workings in Zimbabwe. This discovery led Arab geographers to theorize on Ophir being located in Zimbabwe. In the Old Testament of the Bible, Ophir was world-renowned for its wealth and gold, which was used in King Solomon’s temple. 1 Kings 10: 22, records that King Solomon received cargo consisting of gold, silver, sandalwood, pearls, ivory, apes, and peacocks from Ophir.
