The word “mamlambo” is derived from the Nguni word “mlambo” which means “the river”. The full name “u-ma-mlambo” means “the mother of the river”. In Southern Sotho, mamlambo is known as mamolapo. Belief in mamlambo, water spirit, is not just a South African concept, it is an African traditional belief.
